Our Sunday ideas

A Sunday in the forest: where to discover autumn mushrooms in Poland?

A basket, sturdy shoes and a morning outdoors: mushroom picking is an autumn tradition in Poland. For Sunday 11 October, here are three outing ideas and useful names, with one essential rule: never eat a mushroom without certain identification.

October: a season to explore without promising a harvest

Polish health authorities place the main mushroom season in September and October. But the calendar is not enough: moisture, temperature and local conditions determine their presence. A well-known forest may offer a lovely walk and an empty basket.

Our suggestion for this Sunday prioritises discovering the woodland floor. We have no field survey confirming a mushroom flush in the areas below. For a first outing, choose a short route and supervised instruction if you want to learn how to pick mushrooms.

Three ideas for organising an outing

Near Kraków: Niepołomice Forest. The forest district offers routes and educational trails, including around Sitowiec. Choose an officially open route and check reserve boundaries: permission to walk does not mean mushroom picking is allowed everywhere.

From Wrocław: the forests around Milicz. The forest district presents paths, rest areas and designated parking. This offers an opportunity to combine a walk with observing the woodland floor, while keeping any picking outside nature reserves. Do not confuse accessible forests with the protected areas of the Milicz ponds.

In the west: forests around Zielona Góra. The local district devotes a page to the tradition of grzybobranie and the woodland habitats of different mushroom groups. Locate a starting point on the forest map, then consult district notices before choosing your route.

Names you may hear in the forest

Porcini, boletes and chanterelles are names you will often hear. The table gives vocabulary and general habitats. It cannot identify a specimen or determine whether it can be eaten. Several Polish names refer to groups of species.

English namePolish nameGeneral habitat
Penny bun / porciniborowik szlachetny / prawdziwekConiferous or mixed forests; forestry guides mention pine and spruce in particular.
Bay boletepodgrzybek brunatnyPine forests and mixed woodland; moist undergrowth matters.
Leccinum boleteskoźlarze / kozakiBroadleaf or mixed forests, particularly near birch and poplar, depending on the species.
Suillus boletesmaślakiOften associated with pine; the Polish name covers several species.
Chanterellekurka / pieprznik jadalnyVarious woodland habitats; its presence this Sunday is not guaranteed.

This table is not an identification guide. Finding a mushroom in a suitable habitat never proves that it is edible.

Before setting off: maps, access and weather

Consult the Bank Danych o Lasach map and forest district information. Restrictions can change; the temporary access-ban map does not list every individual forestry worksite. Respect barriers and signs on the ground, and use authorised parking areas.

Picking for personal use is generally free in open public forests, with exceptions: nature reserves, national parks, restricted areas and protected species. Permission to enter a forest does not grant permission to gather mushrooms in every plot.

Check the morning weather and avoid the forest in dangerous winds. Bring a charged phone, an offline map, water, covering clothes and suitable footwear. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

From basket to plate: no shortcuts

A colour, a resemblance or an app result cannot guarantee edibility. Never taste an unfamiliar mushroom to test it. Leave doubtful, very young or damaged specimens where they are; do not destroy mushrooms you do not gather.

For a check, contact a sanitary station with a grzyboznawca or klasyfikator grzybów. The Milicz station advertises consultations after prior telephone contact. This does not guarantee Sunday opening: check the hours before relying on this service.

If poisoning is suspected after eating mushrooms, seek immediate medical help by calling 112 or 999 rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen. Symptoms can be delayed. Follow the emergency services’ instructions.

Our suggestion for this Sunday

Plan a two-hour morning walk on a route you have checked, a break with a thermos, then return before the end of the day. Observe trees, moss and mushrooms without turning the outing into a race to fill a basket.

For beginners, the best souvenir may be an observation walk followed by a meal made with mushrooms bought from an inspected seller. You will have enjoyed autumn without making lunch depend on uncertain identification.
